Nutti Sámi Siida

7-17 August 2014

The perfect outing for Fjällräven Classic participants, their friends and families. Pick-up from Kiruna for transfer by minibus to the small village of Jukkasjärvi, 17 km east of Kiruna.

We arrive to our “Sámi Siida – Sámi camp with reindeer”, and you will have a close encounter with our proud companions, the reindeer, when we enter the reindeer enclosure for feeding them.

Interesting visit to the reindeer corral where the guide tells about reindeer and reindeer husbandry. You learn about the Sámi, the indigenous people of Sápmi, the northern area of Norway, Sweden, and Finland, and the Kola Peninsula, and about their lifestyle as nomads and everyday life today. (Guided tour approx. 30 min)

There are different outdoor exhibitions in the centre you should take a look at. We also have a Sámi handicraft shop with beautiful pieces of art and souvenirs.

Moreover we ask you to coffee with a bun around the open fire. Here you also have the opportunity to buy a traditional Sámi lunch. The best foodie thing to do in Sápmi is actually to savour some suovas, lightly smoked reindeer meat, or smoked arctic char cooked over an open fire in a Sámi hut. (Lunch not included in the price, purchasable on spot.

Next to our Sámi camp you find the beautiful church of Jukkasjärvi, more than 400 years old. It is Lapland’s oldest preserved wooden church in the Swedish part of Sápmi that is famous for its colourful wooden altarpiece triptych. We recommend a visit.

After a stroll of only 900 metres you find the premises of the world-famous Icehotel which is built anew every winter; it will celebrate its 25-year anniversary in winter 2014/15. During the guided tour of the Icehotel-premises you enter the ice storage house with an abundance of crystal clear ice blocks. Listen to the story of the Icehotel and its future projects. (Guided tour approx. 30 min)

In the afternoon pick-up from outside Icehotel for transfer back to Kiruna.
