Fjällräven has over 50 years of built-up knowledge and experience of tent construction. But materials and production techniques are constantly developing and this regularly gives us new and better opportunities and prerequisites to make even better tents. Now we can proudly say that our totally new nylon tents of 2016 are the best tents we have ever made! Fredrik Hyltén- Cavallius, product developer at Fjällräven, explains why.
WHY DID YOU WANT TO MAKE NEW TENTS?
“We saw a possibility to further improve functionality and durability by using new materials and innovative solutions. We also wanted to make choosing a tent as easy as possible. Now we have an all-encompassing collection with high quality throughout and a clear division between the families Abisko, Keb and Polar.”
WHAT MAKES THESE NEW TENTS BETTER THAN THE OLD ONES?
“Firstly we are using nylon which makes the tents lighter and more durable. And we have also reworked all the details, everything from using guylines that are more static to using the best poles available for all our tents.”

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY “LIGHTWEIGHT IS NOT ENOUGH”?
“Quite simply, there is a lot more that your tent needs to be on top of being lightweight. We want it to be safe, stable and comfortable too.”
HOW HAVE YOUR REDUCED YOUR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT?
“We no longer use fluorocarbons (PFCs) in our impregnation, that is the most important change we have made. We also completely avoid PVCs in our manufacturing processes. Our suppliers of poles and pegs have succeeded in creating a sustainable method of anodising aluminium, which means a better dyeing process. And we make tents that will last a long time.”

THERE ARE SO MANY DIFFERENT TENTS. BUT WHERE IS THE CLASSIC AKKA MODEL?
“Akka’s basic design lives on in the Endurance models but we are no longer using the name. With our new families it is much easier to find the right tent. There is just the right amount of tents for everyone to be sure that they will find a model that suits them. We have a number of different models that we want to offer in different sizes.”
WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE TENT?
“Abisko Shape. It compares really well to the others regarding weight, strength and wind stability and it has space for both you and your equipment. It is the essence of a Fjällräven tent that is built on the Scandinavian tradition of tunnel tents. It is also really easy to pitch.”
